NDP Disabilities Critic Manon Perreault’s statement (International Day of Persons with Disabilities)

Monday, December 3, 2012

Speaker: The Honourable Andrew Scheer

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Manon Perreault (Montcalm, NDP):

Mr. Speaker, approximately 4.4 million Canadians are living with disabilities. On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, New Democrats are celebrating all that these people contribute to our country.
Much progress has been made to identify and eliminate barriers that people with disabilities face daily. Far too frequently, however, they are expected to accept without flinching barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Canadians with disabilities often face greater financial insecurity, poor housing, limited employment opportunities, and unequal access to the health services they need.
We challenge this government to meet as soon as possible its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The NDP team is working to build a more just and prosperous Canada where every citizen can develop his full potential.
