Palliative Care – LET’S TALK ABOUT IT

When: Wednesday, April 16th – 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Where: 600 Rogers Road, Main Floor Meeting Room

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Every family has to deal with the loss of a loved one and these traumatic moments are made more difficult and more expensive when there is no access to quality end-of-life (palliative) care. A vast majority of Canadians prefer to die at home in the presence of loved ones. Yet almost 70 per cent of Canadian deaths occur at hospitals and only 16 to 30 per cent of Canadians have access to hospice palliative care and end-of-life services.
With an aging population, it is crucial that the Federal government provide leadership in palliative care and end-of-life services. Quality hospice and palliative care allows families to ensure that their loved ones die in relative dignity and reduces the financial stress on the health care system. The Federal government has a role to play and a responsibility to all Canadians. This is why the NDP is asking Parliament to support a national palliative care strategy to help support families and people facing death.

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT: Join me and my colleague MP Charlie Angus for a discussion on this very important topic. I look forward to seeing you.

Save Your Vote Town Hall in Toronto

NDP MPs Craig Scott and David Christopherson are hosting an important town hall in Toronto — and you’re invited.

Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are radically changing Canada’s election laws without any consultation. They even shut down debate in Parliament to ram their Unfair Elections Act through.

That’s why New Democrats are hosting public town halls across the country to make sure your voice is heard.

When: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 7:00pm

Where: Ontario Institute for Studies in Education

252 Bloor St W, Toronto, Ontario

Town Hall Meeting

January 23, 2014

TORONTO - New Democrat MPs from Toronto’s west-end will host a public meeting to discuss the direction of Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration system. Additionally local service providers will be on hand to identify the needs of local residents.

“This meeting will serve two important purposes,” said Davenport NDP MP Andrew Cash, “We will be able to actually match individuals with service providers from the community, and we will also discuss recent changes to our immigration system and what they mean to the future of Canada.”

In recent years the Conservative Government has overhauled Canadian immigration making Canada a less welcoming country. For two years the Harper Government blocked sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents, it has cancelled health coverage for refugees and mismanaged the temporary foreign worker program.

“Family reunification should be central to our immigration system but instead this Conservative government has made it harder than ever for families to reunite on Canadian soil,” said Peggy Nash, MP for Parkdale-High Park, who will host the meeting alongside Mr. Cash and Mike Sullivan, the MP for York South-Weston.

The town hall meeting will take place on Thursday February 13th, 6pm at Bishop Morocco/Thomas Merton High School at Bloor and Dundas Street West, 1515 Bloor Street West.

“This meeting will give residents of West-End Toronto much needed information,” said Mike Sullivan, “And it will give us the tools we need to fight for them in Ottawa and improve Canada’s immigration system.”

NDP Statement on Passing of Distinguished Veteran Cliff Chadderton, Head of War Amps

December 2

Peter Stoffer Sackville—Eastern Shore, NS

“Mr. Speaker, it is with great sadness I rise in the House of Commons today to announce the passing of one of Canada’s greatest citizens, Mr. Cliff Chadderton.

Mr. Chadderton was born in Fort William, Ontario, and was raised in Winnipeg. In 1939, he joined the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. He fought for his country with great valour and distinction, being wounded twice. He said, “I left my leg in that beautiful country of The Netherlands”. When he came back, he was a tireless advocate for all veterans and for children with disabilities, and he helped start the War Amps society. He was also chair of the National Council of Veterans Associations in Canada.

He received many awards, including the Terry Fox Hall of Fame, the Canada Veterans Hall of Valour, the Companion of the Order of Canada and the Legion of Honour from France.

Mr. Chadderton was a true Canadian, in that he sacrificed so much of his own personal life to help those citizens around him, especially those children with disabilities. That is why I encourage every Canadian to recognize and honour this man by joining up with the War Amps and getting a key chain with a key tag so that children with disabilities can be helped.

Mr. Chadderton, indeed, was a true hero. On behalf of the House of Commons, I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends and say, “Lest we forget”.”
